Wooden Caskets
Posted on
Wooden caskets are made of Hard and soft woods; and are viewed by most as very elegant. They are normally more expensive than steel caskets, because they require more hands-on labor during construction. Softwoods like Pine, Ash, and Cedar will cost less than hardwoods like Oak, Hickory, and Maple, most of the time. Though wooden caskets look great, the disadvantage is that they do not seal like a sealing metal casket. Some wooden caskets have a plastic liner on the interior that is designed to repel moisture from reaching the contents on interior; and a few select models even have a sealing system installed. However, all wood is in fact porous; thus once moisture reaches the wood it will be absorbed, then freezes and crack, etc. This issue can be countered by choosing a quality outer container / vault. We recommend using a Poly-Vault. Go to the section on vault for more information.
